In the mountains of Himachal Pradesh is a small temple dedicated toMother Kunti, near a lake called Kunti Lake. I had the opportunity tovisit thishttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif wonderful place, it is surrounded by mountains and the lakeis crystal clear pure water and the sight is beautiful to see as thereare no shops and commercial activities there. One lady was sitting andtaking care of the temple all day and she gave us prasadam. She was agedand said that Kunti Devi cured her, such simple folk live in themountains, it was a very good experience for me and my family. I alsovisited an ancient temple of Lakshmi Narayana built by the Pandavas 5000years ago, in Chinnaur,Himachal Pradesh. This temple is very peaceful,and they conduct services here like free food distribution, Pooja ofvarious types etc. Lord Krishna has blessed the Pandavas to buildtemples all over India, and we can also find temples built by thePandavas in places as far south as Bangalore.

When the Pandavas were banished by Duryodhana and forced to live incognito in the forest, no-one could trace out where they were staying. At that time, the great sage Narada Muni met Lord Krsna and said, "My dear Mukunda, although You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the all powerful person, by making friendship with You the Pandavas have become bereft of their legitimate right to the kingdom of the world - and moreover, they are now living in the forest incognito. Sometimes they must work as ordinary laborers in someone else's house. These symptoms appear to be very inauspicious materially, but the beauty is that, the Pandavas have not lost their faith and love for You, in spite of all these tribulations. In fact,they are always thinking of You and chanting Your name in ecstatic friendship.

Students should be like Arjuna

When Guru Dronacharya is appointed the Commander in Chief of the Kuru Army during Mahabharata he immediately announces the formation of “Chakravayu” While discussing the same with Duryodhana he asks that Arjun’s attention be diverted to another front so that he can capture Yudhistra bringing war to an end as Arjuna was the only person capable apart from Ashwathama to enter and exit the Chakravayu.

On hearing this Dushassan flew into a rage and accused Dronacharya of being partial and teaching Arjuna more than all other pupils. The answer Guru Dronacharya gives to Dusshasan is also my case for continued learning from managers and students alike. He tells Dushassan the reason why Arjuna is more capable than all the Pandavas and Kauravas alike is not because he taught him more but because he was an “Active Learner” and while everyone took his teaching as the end, Arjuna took his teaching as the beginning and continued his quest for learning and today is the only student of his who can challenge him in the battlefield.

Note: “I know everything”, the three most frightening words you can ever hear in corridors of colleges. In a fast changing dynamic world can we really say we know everything?

Cos must realise individuals possess different skill sets, aptitude

It was a rare occasion when the Pandava brothers fought amongst each other. It began when Arjuna claimed that his weapon, the bow, was the most sophisticated weapon in the world. Bhima argued that it was his weapon, the mace, which was the most sophisticated. Yudhishtira joined in; he felt his weapon, the spear, was the best weapon created by the gods. Finally, the twins, Nakula and Sahadeva, had their say: the sword they said was the ultimate weapon. The arguments went on for days and nights, each brother defending his weapon passionately. Their teacher, Drona, watched in bewilderment.

When all the brothers were exhausted from not being able to convince others, they turned to their teacher and asked him to act as judge. “The contest reveals nothing about the weapons but it does reveal a lot about you. You are claiming what is best for you is best for the world. You are turning subjective reality into objective reality.”
Arjuna was good with the bow and so became a great archer. That does not make the bow the greatest weapon in the world. Bhima was good with the mace and so became a great mace-warrior. That does not make the mace the best weapon in the world. Each one was presenting their natural strength as an objective choice. They were functioning in hindsight – a mistake that is commonly made in companies.

Yogesh and Shailesh were having a fight. They were childhood friends. Yogesh worked in a multinational company and had done very well, rising to the rank of a director. Shailesh had started his own business and it had done very well. Yogesh felt that working in a multinational company is the best thing in the world. Shailesh felt running one’s own business is the best thing in the world. Each one argued his case logically without realising that neither possessed the other’s skill sets .

Had Yogesh started a business, it would have in all likelihood failed and Shailesh would have not survived a day working in another man’s organisation. Yogesh was great at working in an organisation and getting people to follow processes, while Shailesh was great working on his own and leading people independently. Each one was presenting his natural strengths as a rational choice. They were making these claims post-facto (after the success) but declaring it to be pre-facto (decisions taken before success).

During recruitment, young interns are placed in various departments and each departmental head declares their department to be the best department. Few sit back to wonder, is it good for the intern? Does he have the attitude and the aptitude for that department? Are we unknowingly putting the bow in Bhima’s hand and the mace in Arjuna’s? That would not lead to success.
